The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered a criminal hideout that was operating under the guise of a church.
In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, seven suspects, four men and three women were arrested during a raid carried out on April 8, 2026.
According to the police, early findings suggest the location was being used as a front for various criminal activities.
Describing the operation, the command said it was part of an intelligence-led effort to clamp down on crime across the state, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
Acting on credible information that suspected criminals were hiding in a compound disguised as a church, officers moved swiftly and carried out a targeted raid in the early hours of April 8.
The operation led to the arrest of the seven suspects, identified as Preacher Brain Ebeka, Kenneth Ezekiel, Dickson Ndueso, Abang Rowland, Esther Elijah Okon, Joy Elijah Okon, and another Esther Elijah Okon.
A search of the premises uncovered several items, including two locally made double-barrel guns, five spent cartridges, four motorcycles, three large generators, ten mobile phones, a police crest, jungle boots, a peak cap, a saw blade, a spanner, multiple vehicle plate numbers, machetes, a special forces vest, bottles believed to contain “spiritual oil,” and a photograph linked to an ongoing investigation.
Police say the discoveries have raised serious concerns about the use of religious fronts to conceal illegal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has ordered a full investigation and intensified efforts to track down the main suspect who is still on the run.
The command also issued a strong warning to criminal elements, stating that there will be no safe haven for anyone attempting to hide unlawful activities under any disguise, including religious cover.
Residents have been urged to remain alert and support law enforcement by sharing timely and credible information.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
