The Nigerian Army has launched a search-and-rescue operation after a 40-year-old man, Bright Ochinachi, escaped from a kidnappers’ den in Abia State.
In a statement released on Monday, March 23, 2026, Captain Mazinho Attah, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, confirmed the development.
According to Ochinachi, he was abducted on March 15, 2026, by unidentified gunmen along the busy Umuahia–Aba road, a route that has experienced recurring security concerns. His attackers reportedly made away with his vehicle after the abduction.
Following his escape, Ochinachi reported the incident to Nigerian Army personnel stationed in the Isiala Ngwa area.
Troops quickly swung into action, launching a coordinated search-and-rescue operation in the Uratta and Umuchima forest areas. The operation, carried out with the victim’s guidance, is aimed at tracking down the suspects and recovering the stolen vehicle.
Military authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further incidents along the corridor.
Residents in the area have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
The Army noted that the incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in parts of the South-East, even as troops continue to intensify operations to protect lives and property across the region.
